Fundraising » Frequently Asked Questions about the Building Project
1. Why build a new building? Why not remodel or add to the present building?
Parts of the present building do not meet the requirements of the modern building code. By adding on, we will be required to reconstruct much of the old building. This will be very expensive and not cost efficient.
2. What will happen to the present museum building?
Since it is one of the oldest commercial buildings in the city, and Depot St. was a lively business area, the first floor will be converted to resemble a typical general store from the early 1900’s. The upstairs will be used for storage. An engineer has studied the building and has determined that it is structurally sound.
3. Will it be too expensive to maintain two buildings?
Since the upstairs is not heated and the bathrooms will seldom be used, the utility cost for the old building will be minimal. The Seymour Historical Society will coordinate the volunteer help to staff the museum. With TV technology, it is possible to supervise the buildings with one person.
4. Why do we need a new museum in Seymour?
The projected building will be a cultural, educational, and community center. It will contain a multi-purpose room that may serve as a classroom, meeting room, or display area. The present museum is too crowded. It lacks appropriate exhibit area, does not accommodate visiting groups, and fails to meet present building code requirements. With the completion of the adjacent trail, and growing interest in Seymour’s role in the origin of the hamburger, more visitors will frequent the Depot St. area.
5. What will the new building cost?
As designed, 40’x 70’ and three floors including the basement, the cost will be between $1,000,000.00 and $1,200,000.00. The final figure depends on how sophisticated the exhibits are, and varying construction costs. We would like to raise 1.4 million.
6. How much money has been pledged?
Including the Seymour Community Historical Society building fund and preliminary discussions with several major contributors, we can account for around $700,000.00. The building committee is hopeful that several other people will be interested in making major donations.
7. Will city taxes be used to pay the utilities and expenses for the new building?
An operating fund of $200,000.00 is included in the original cost. The building will also generate income through donations, sales, historical society activities, and contributions from groups such as HOTH.
8. Will the city hire someone to administer the building?
No. It will be staffed with volunteers.
9. How often will the museum be open?
The plan is afternoons, Tuesday through Sunday, during the summer and limited winter hours. It will also be available for special functions and educational activities.
10. Where will the new building be located?
It will fit nicely between the gazebo and present museum. This will require relocation of the donor wall.
11. How can I help?
In order for this project to succeed, we will need to raise another $600,000.00 to $700,000. All contributions, regardless of size are appreciated. You can help preserve your family heritage and Seymour area history.
